Hyundai Sonata most shopped vehicle in entire industry.

Sonata Has Been on More Shopping Lists than Any Other Vehicle in Seven of the Last Nine Months According to Compete Data

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Feb. 22, 2011 ??? Hyundai Sonata, the game-changing midsize sedan with its emotional ???Fluidic Sculpture??? design and all four-cylinder engine lineup, was the most-shopped vehicle in January according to data from Compete, a Kantar Media company. Sonata has been on more shopping lists than any other vehicle in the industry in seven of the last nine months, continuing to top perennial leaders like Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Honda Civic and Ford Fusion, according to Compete???s analysis of consumer automotive shopping behavior.

Lead by Sonata, Hyundai demand continued its momentum with more than 268,000 in market shoppers in January, representing a 21 percent increase from December 2010. The all-new 2011 Elantra was the second most shopped Hyundai model achieving a six-month high in demand and a 39 percent increase from December. Industry wide, January shopper volume (2.8 million) increased 11 percent compared to January 2010, demonstrating the continued recovery in automotive shopping interest.

???Sonata???s ability to attract and engage consumers over the past nine months has been impressive and they have successfully converted many of these shoppers into actual buyers with Sonata sales up 150 percent in January," said Dennis Bulgarelli, director of Automotive at Compete. ???Shopping activity for the entire industry is up 11 percent, starting off what we think will be a strong year for the automotive industry.???

Hyundai???s all-new 2011 Sonata represents a modern approach to the traditional midsize sedan segment by using only advanced four-cylinder engines, dynamic design and luxury features offered with Hyundai???s strong value proposition. The Sonata launched with a new Theta II 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine and in-house six-speed automatic transmission.  The vehicle offers class-leading fuel economy of 22 mpg city/35 mpg highway and 198 horsepower standard. Sonata is also available in Turbo and Hybrid versions, with Hybrid achieving class-leading 40 mpg highway fuel economy.

With many safety features, including Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, and Anti-lock Braking System, Sonata was the first midsize car to receive a five-star crash test rating under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration???s new, more stringent 2011 system and an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick honor, placing it in a safety position unsurpassed in the industry.

???A year after its initial launch consumers continue to be attracted to Sonata???s exciting design, best-in-class fuel economy and outstanding residual value,??? said Mike O???Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. ???Starting off the year as the most shopped vehicle, Sonata is picking up right where it left off in 2010, when it set its U.S. sales volume record.???

Hyundai, VW top insurance industry safe car list

South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia and German car maker Volkswagen lead the insurance industry's annual list of the safest new vehicles, used by safety minded consumers looking to buy a new car.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recognized 66 vehicles on Wednesday with its "top safety pick award" for the 2011 model year, the most-ever awarded by the Virginia-based group. The number was more than double the 27 vehicles selected last year.

Hyundai Motor Corp. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp., and Volkswagen AG and its Audi brand received the most awards with nine, followed by eight awards apiece by General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. The awards, used in advertising to attract car buyers, bolster Hyundai and Volkswagen as they attempt to build a larger foothold in the United States.

Hyundai's Genesis sedan, Sonata midsize and Santa Fe and Tucson sport utility vehicles picked up awards, while Kia was recognized for the Optima midsize car, the Forte and Soul small cars, and the Sorento and Sportage SUVs. Volkswagen won plaudits for the Jetta and Jetta SportWagen, the Golf and GTI small cars and the Touareg and Tiguan SUVs. Audi's A3 and A4 sedans and Q5 SUV also made the list.

Subaru and Chrysler received five awards apiece while Volvo and Mercedes had four. Subaru was the only automaker to win awards in every vehicle category in which it competes. Nissan and Honda had two awards each and Mitsubishi and BMW had one.

Hyundai said the award was particularly sweet for the Sonata, which also received the top score of five stars in the government's crash test program. The combination put Sonata "in a safety position unsurpassed in the industry," said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.

Mark Barnes, Volkswagen of America's chief operating officer, said the recognition for VW was a "testament to our commitment to engineering safe vehicles."

GM's winners include the Chevrolet Malibu, Cruze and Equinox; Cadillac CTS and SRX; Buick LaCrosse and Regal and GMC Terrain. Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing, said the award would build on "the already strong global safety reputation of the Cruze."

Ford's picks include the Ford Taurus, Fusion, Fiesta, Explorer and Flex; and the Lincoln MKS, MKZ and MKT. Ford vice president Sue Cischke said the Explorer, which arrived at dealer showrooms earlier this month, offered a good example of the company's safety improvements, including inflatable seat belts and technology that helps a driver maintain control of the vehicle along tough curves.

Toyota, which has grappled with several high-profile recalls during the past year, scored with the Toyota Avalon, Corolla, Sienna, Highlander and Venza; the Lexus RX; and the Scion tC and xB. Toyota said its eight safety picks were "reflective of our ongoing commitment to developing safe and reliable vehicles for our customers."

The vehicles were chosen for protection in front, side and rear crash tests. To qualify for the award, the insurance industry group also requires the vehicles to have anti-rollover electronic stability control, or ESC, and receive top scores in roof strength tests.

Institute president Adrian Lund credited automakers for "quickly rising to meet the more-challenging criteria for `Top Safety Pick."' He said several automakers have requested tests for new models coming out early next year and Lund predicted more winners would be added. ?

2011 HYUNDAI SONATA NAMED AUTOMOBILE MAGAZINE ???ALL STAR???

2/15/2010, Ann Arbor, Michigan

The all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata has been named to Automobile Magazine???s annual ???All Stars??? list as one of the most outstanding cars of the year.

???The critical acclaim and recognition from experts like the editors of Automobile Magazine is gratifying,??? said John Krafcik, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. ???Sonata is a game-changing car that has surpassed everyone???s expectations. The All Star award is recognition that the record number of customers who chose Sonata this year made a great choice.???

Each fall, Automobile Magazine tests new model cars and its reigning All Stars before selecting 10 vehicles that stand out among all others in the market.

???The Sonata has emerged as an unquestioned leader in a segment that???s bursting with excellent automobiles. Painstakingly conceptualized, designed and engineered by Hyundai, the Sonata meets and exceeds the varied needs and wishes of demanding American buyers,??? writes Automobile Magazine. The editors conclude, ???The Sonata is a car that sells purely on its merits rather than on its warranty, and increasing numbers of savvy Americans are beating a path to Hyundai???s door."

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata was introduced earlier this year. Sonata brings to the market a number of breakthroughs previously unheard of in the mid-size family sedan segment including standout design, a standard gasoline direct injected engine that delivers 35 miles per gallon on the highway, an optional 274-horsepower 4-cylinder turbo and a hybrid model that will go on sale in the U.S. in January.

Through the first 11 months of the year, Sonata sales are up 65 percent over last year on the strength of the new model, which, is manufactured at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama. Sonata???s breakthrough 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine, 2.0-liter turbo GDI and 6-speed automatic transmission also are manufactured in the United States. Hyundai Motor America sold 500,000 new vehicles in the U.S. for the first time ever, this year. Sonata has been the most ???shopped??? midsize car in the market for six of the past seven months as measured by Compete, an automotive market analysis firm.

The complete story on the ???Automobile All Stars??? is available in the February 2011 issue of Automobile Magazine and at www.automobilemagazine.com. The February issue will be available on iPad on December 20 and on newsstands on January 4, 2011.

"2011 Hyundai Elantra First Drive" Edmunds review of the ALL NEW ELANTRA!

Generally the small-car compromise goes something like this ??? among style, content or affordability, pick any two. It turns out that making inexpensive cars that are profitable ??? and therefore worthwhile for the automaker to invest in ??? is tricky business.

With the 2011 Hyundai Elantra, the company is attempting to take that box of compromise and shake it all about. Hyundai's taking the fight to the compact side of the sedan spectrum with the new Elantra, the latest in the reinvention of its model range. We're getting the impression that the company's just lining up dominoes and flicking them over, one by one. It's making this look easy.

Bold Style
It's not going to be easy, of course, as the compact car class is chock-full of mainstays like the Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Nissan Sentra and Toyota Corolla, plus the new Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Fiesta sedans.

The Elantra's visual presence suggests confidence. Although similar to the outgoing Elantra in width and length, the 2011 Hyundai Elantra chops nearly 2 inches out of the height and instead adds it to the wheelbase. The effect is dramatic, and no longer does the Elantra look frumpy.

The new car's cohesive and unusually purposeful look is the product of Hyundai's California design studio, and while there are hints of Civic in the greenhouse and some Lexus IS at the rear, the Elantra largely has a look all its own. The subdued aggression of the nose, the long wheelbase, sharp character lines ??? this is definitely not a toylike small car.

Styling nits to pick? It looks a bit awkward with the smaller 16-inch wheels, but little else. The Elantra simply looks terrific in the metal.

Not Bad Inside Either
Inside the cabin, the pinched-waist look to the center stack adds a bit of flair while presenting the various and sundry controls in a clean and straightforward manner. Materials are of the hard-but-look-soft variety, and there are mercifully few surfaces that don't have a matte finish.

Despite the deep cowl, the interior feels breezy and spacious ??? headroom up front is plentiful for 6-footers and the steering wheel is a bit smaller in diameter than usual, which enhances the sense of space up front. The backseat is a different story, as headroom is cramped, although legroom is plentiful even for tall folks. Also of note ??? rear seat heaters. Yep, and they're standard on the Elantra Limited.

One Engine for All
All 2011 Elantras are powered by an all-new 1.8-liter four-cylinder generating 148 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 131 pound-feet of torque at 4,700 rpm. The new engine is the single most significant contributor to the Elantra's fuel-sipping ways, mainly because the outgoing Beta iron-block four was kind of a dinosaur. The all-aluminum engine has a two-step variable-length intake manifold and continuously variable intake and exhaust cams to help broaden the torque curve while improving fuel economy. An intelligent alternator further ekes out fuel economy by charging primarily when it is most efficient to do so.

Hyundai is quite proud of the Elantra's 29 city/40 highway mpg, taking great pains to point out that those fuel economy numbers apply to all Elantras regardless of transmission, trim level, wheel size or even paint color. No premium need be paid for a special high-efficiency version as with the Cruze Eco or Fiesta with the Super Fuel Economy package. This way, everyone wins ??? consumers and CAFE-conscious automaker alike.

Balancing Fun and Frugality
High fuel economy numbers such as these often come at the expense of any semblance of fun since they typically rely on a transmission (well, for automatics, anyway) that upshifts to 6th gear before you leave the driveway and low-rolling-resistance tires that howl like a pack of coyotes when you think about turning the wheel. Not so the Elantra. It's nimble and there's a solid amount of grip on tap when you bend it into a corner. The fully electric steering doesn't have Mazda 3 levels of driver engagement, but it is very precise and certainly feels better resolved than the Sonata's odd tiller.

Isolation from road noise could be better. The Elantra relays coarseness through its structure in a way that reminds you that, yes, you're driving a car priced somewhere in the teens.

The Elantra rides firmly, but it's a well-damped firm and not an underdamped cheap-car crashy-firm.

Although it delivers fully class-competitive power, the Elantra's engine still relies on revs to tackle large hills or freeway merging situations. Thus, the transmission's ability to seamlessly change to the right gear for the occasion is that much more critical. Fortunately, gearchanges from the Elantra's autobox are creamy smooth and downshifts are served up willingly when needed. No stodginess or hunting here. A six-speed manual is standard on base models, but the six-speed automatic is optional on the GLS and standard on the Limited.

The front suspension consists of MacPherson struts up front and there's a twist-beam rear suspension. This compact rear suspension allows for ample cargo volume of 14.8 cubic feet. Its short-length rear deck makes for a deep cargo area, and the wide deck lid is supported by gooseneck hinges.

Surprisingly, Hyundai fitted monotube dampers to the Elantra's rear suspension rather than cheaper twin-tube dampers. Engineers can usually dial in better ride quality with monotubes since they can generate meaningful damping force even at very small piston movements. And sure enough, although the Elantra rides firmly, it's a well-damped firm and not an underdamped cheap-car crashy-firm. The kind of firm that we can get behind.

Ride quality has a lot to do with chassis stiffness, too, and there the new Elantra is said to boast a 37 percent increase in torsional rigidity over the outgoing model. The fundamental goodness of the Elantra's chassis is, er, good.

Two Trim Levels, Many Choices
Like the Sonata, the Elantra will be offered in two trim levels, GLS and Limited. GLS runs the gamut from the $15,550 bare-bones loss-leader version with a six-speed manual gearbox, 15-inch steelies and no cruise or air-conditioning, to the optioned-up GLS Navigation.

The automatic-only Limited grants access to options like leather, heated front and rear seats, 17-inch wheels and other goodies you expect in a fancy-pants version with a name like "Limited." To this you can add a Premium package, which forms the upper bound of Elantra pricing at $22,700. Weight weenies will be pleased to know that the base GLS with manual gearbox weighs 2,661 pounds, whereas the gussied-up Limited weighs some 215 pounds more.

Don't expect to find many base GLSs that exist primarily to feature the low starting price. Realistically, most Elantras will be equipped somewhere in between ??? with the six-speed automatic and a few creature comforts but sans navigation. The GLS with the Preferred package starts at $18,350.

Optioned smartly, the Elantra is more than just a lot of car for the money. It's a sharply dressed, roomy and amply equipped car for the money. It was before to some degree, but now it has classy looks to match. And when it comes to economy sedans, that still matters.

Edmunds attended a manufacturer-sponsored event, to which selected members of the press were invited, to facilitate this report.

Hyundai Motor America announced an all-time record for November sales

Hyundai Motor America announced an all-time record for November sales of 40,723 units, up 45 percent versus 2009. November retail sales were up 85 percent from last year. For the year-to-date, Hyundai has already established a new annual sales record with total volume of 493,426, up 23 percent versus the same 11 month period in 2009, with retail sales up 33 percent for the same period.

???We are encouraged by a second consecutive month of strengthening industry retail sales. With Hyundai???s rapidly expanding lineup of fresh, fuel-efficient and high quality products, we???re positioned right in the sweet spot for this recovery,??? said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales, Hyundai Motor America. ???Hyundai???s DNA is all about delivering best-in-class value, quality and fuel efficiency. We are equally committed to providing customers with a memorable retail experience as was recently reflected in our improved position in the rankings of the 2010 J.D. Power and Associates U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI), where Hyundai was the most improved brand in the industry and the top-ranked Asian brand. We have aggressive plans in place to sustain this momentum into December and leverage a healthy holiday selling season to finish out this record-breaking year with a flourish.???

With the first 192 sales of Hyundai???s all-new 2011 Elantra already recorded this month, Hyundai begins a new sales-reporting methodology it hopes all brands in the industry will follow. ???The 2011 Elantra is the first of four planned 40-mpg vehicles in Hyundai???s lineup,??? said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. ???But for us, leadership isn???t how many low-volume special-edition 40-mpg models we offer, but rather how many 40-mpg vehicles consumers actually buy. We aim to lead the industry in the sales of 40-mpg vehicles, and to make this a challenge that everyone can follow, we???ll be the first to report our monthly 40-mpg vehicle sales tally. We???d love to see others follow our lead.???

Elantra, Sonata, and Tucson sales for November increased 41 percent, 72 percent, and 243 percent respectively, while Genesis achieved an all-time sales record of 3,005 units, up 72 percent, marking the 17th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases for Hyundai???s award-winning premium car. Genesis will be joined by Equus, Hyundai???s all-new flagship, in dealership in December.

New Hyundai Elantra boasts 40 mpg, $15,500 price

Nov 18, 2010

Hyundai hopes the 2011 Elantra, unveiled today at the Los Angeles auto show, plows into the small-car market as effectively as the remade Sonata did in the mid-size category, where it's become a fast-seller. Last month it was fourth-best-selling mid-size, closing fast on Nissan's Altima. To achieve the goal, Hyundai's set Elantra's starting price at what it considers a tempting $15,550 including shipping, and will be able to advertise 40 mpg on the highway.

Hyundai tried to make the Elantra stylish, hoping it reminds you of the sleek Sonata, but making some folks think instead of the Honda Civic -- not necessarily bad.
Jake Fisher of Consumer Reports magazine says he thinks the Elantra is one of the most significant cars of the auto show. It's a stylish, basic car that achieves a lot of its fuel efficiency through weight savings in contrast to glitzier cars with fancy, expensive electric drive systems.
Hyundai's carved out considerable leg and knee room in the back seats. In a quick sit-test at the show, we had lots of spare room in back even sitting behind a six-foot-plus driver.
Elantra weighs 2,661 pounds, light enough that it should be well-motivated by the 1.8-liter four-cylinder rated 148 hp and 131 lbs.-ft. of torque. It'll be available with a six-speed automatic -- rare in this size and price class -- or a six-speed manual. It's built at Montgomery, Ala., and will be shipped to dealers by year's end.

FINANCIAL  -- Hyundai???s brand momentum continued its upward trajectory, earning the No. 6 ranking on the 2010 Customer Loyalty Leaders list which showcases the results of an annual survey by Brand Keys, a New York-based brand, customer loyalty and engagement consultancy.

Hyundai is one of only two car brands in the top 50 and is also the  highest ranked brand in the automotive category in this year???s report.

"This year's Brand Keys Loyalty Leaders List includes 501 brands in 70 categories.  In 2008, Hyundai was ranked 295th and has since moved up significantly to No. 24 last year and now No. 6 in 2010," Hyundai said.

Hyundai Aims To Lead The Mid-size Hybrid Pack

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid ??? Click above for high-res image gallery

At some point, the minds at Hyundai got serious about the company's mid-sized sedan game. Seemingly in a heartbeat, the Korean manufacturer went from being completely under the radar of the average American family sedan buyer to a viable alternative to default buys like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. That jump fell solely on the shoulders of the all-new 2011 Sonata, a sedan that has so far delivered the kind of styling, efficiency and low MSRP that sends consumers scrambling for their checkbook. But if you want to go the full distance in this segment, you had better come to the fight packing more than just a competent base model.

That's something you don't need to tell Hyundai. The company has shored up its Sonata line with a potent turbocharged 2.0-liter model designed to tango with V6-equipped competitors as well as the car you see above ??? a hybrid model that comes loaded with nearly all of the latest and greatest tech to keep fuel consumption at a minimum. Is it enough to put the Sonata Hybrid ahead of the electrified versions of the heavy hitters already prowling the scene? We took the wheel to find out.

The mid-size hybrid segment is a funny little corner of the automotive world. Most of the players at this table are little more than standard sedans that have had their mechanical innards gutted and replaced with mutant internal combustion/electric motor mashups. From their exteriors, there's generally been little to distinguish hybrid from V6 models other than wheel options and maybe a badge or two. But Hyundai has waded into somewhat uncharted waters by offering the hybrid version of the Sonata with bodywork that goes a long way toward separating the car from its siblings.

The keen-eyed out there are likely to pick up on a handful of small details that both add a bit of funky, slightly futuristic styling to the mix and help slim the vehicle's shape as it cuts through the air. Up front, Hyundai's designers and engineers worked together to come up with that slightly agape front fascia. There's more than a little catfish in that hexagonal opening, but it serves the purpose of setting the Sonata Hybrid apart from the rest of the family. (Note, too, that the 'bumper' bar has been subtly altered from the model that debuted at the New York Auto Show). Additionally, LED daytime running lights grace the front headlights and the low-set fog lights now boast a stylish upkick that wraps around the front fascia.

The profile of the 2011 Sonata Hybrid reverts to more well-established tricks of the mid-size hybrid trade, including re-sculpted side skirts and small but effective badges on the front fenders. Hyundai has also graced its hybrid with two unique wheel selections, a smaller 16-inch roller that shouts, "I'll see you at Mac World," and an optional, more attractive 17-inch five-spoke design like the one on our tester.

Move around back, and if you're paying close attention, you'll notice that the rear fascia is slightly squared-off on both sides. Those sharp edges help the Sonata Hybrid achieve its dizzyingly low .25 coefficient of drag. The standard Sonata makes do with a still enviable .28 cD. To complete the futuristic picture, Hyundai has also thrown in reworked taillights that are designed to evoke the image of an atom when lit.

But as different as the exterior of the Sonata Hybrid is from its standard internal-combustion brethren, things have been left largely untouched inside. Buyers will still find the comfortable thrones, attractive dash and heaps of soft-touch goodies layered over almost every surface just like in the base Sonata. One difference between the base Sonata and the hybrid comes in the form of decreased trunk space. While the standard Sonata yields an EPA-rated cargo volume of 16.4 cubic feet, the compact battery pack soaks up a full 5.7 cubes all by itself. But the largest change comes at the instrument cluster, where a helpful full-color LCD screen delivers pertinent information on the vehicle's battery state of charge, fuel economy and an "Eco Score." Likewise, the left instrument bezel has forsaken the standard tachometer in favor of a helpful guide that lets drivers know when the vehicle can be driven in all-electric mode.

And when is that, exactly? Officially, Hyundai says that the Sonata Hybrid can cruise on all-electric go-go at speeds of up to 62 mph, though in our testing we saw electric-only driving at 65 mph under light acceleration downhill. and there was some indication from the company's engineers that the car may be capable of doing even better. How do they do it? Under the hood, Hyundai has converted its 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine to the Atkinson Cycle and added a 40-horsepower electric motor. The duo is good for a combined 206 horsepower and 193 pound-feet of torque, but the real star of the show is the car's battery pack.

Instead of opting for the cheaper nickel-metal hydride cells used in cars like the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid and Nissan Altima Hybrid, Hyundai has gone for costlier lithium-polymer cells. The company has crammed a total of 72 cells into the pack, each about the size of a cigar box lid and the weight of a roll of quarters. Throw in all of the necessary electronic wizardry to manage the LiPo goodies and a structure to support them, and you're looking at a battery pack that weighs a relatively svelte 96 pounds.

Hyundai decided to opt for the more expensive battery cells for several reasons, the largest of which is the fact that the lithium-polymer pack weighs considerably less than other materials available right now. In addition, the automaker's engineers note that the cells have no memory, generate less heat than comparable tech and take up less room. Unfortunately, the lithium-polymer tech is also expensive. Hyundai isn't saying how much the company is shelling out for the battery pack in the Sonata Hybrid, but other automakers are looking to use lithium-based cells in their new vehicles, so the automaker is just riding the edge of the technological curve here.

Hyundai says that the Sonata Hybrid is good for 36 miles per gallon in the city and 40 mpg on the highway, and the high-tech battery pack is only a portion of that story. The company's engineers have also rolled in a host of tricks to keep the fuel-economy numbers as high as possible, including what they call an "active air flap" behind that gaping hexagonal inlet in the front fascia. At low speeds, the flap is open to assist in cooling the gas engine, but once the vehicle speeds up, the flap closes to decrease the Sonata Hybrid's coefficient of drag by as much as 10 percent.

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid engine

In addition, the sedan makes use of an engine clutch that can separate the gasoline engine from the electric motor, helping the hybrid to clip along on electric power even at highway speeds, all without using an ounce of fuel. Hyundai has also made the interesting step of shutting off the gasoline engine entirely when the vehicle decelerates, further conserving fuel and allowing the regenerative brakes to recharge the batteries.

And what does all of that translate into once on the road? During our time behind the wheel, we saw just over 36 mpg in intermittent stop and go driving, though if you're ginger with the accelerator, numbers closer to 40 in combined driving weren't unheard of among the gaggle of writers the company had out to sample the Sonata Hybrid. Just out of morbid curiosity, we spent the last 30 miles of our drive hypermiling the hybrid. When all was said and done, we walked away with a sweaty 60 mpg, further proving that by and large, fuel economy falls on the shoulders of the nut behind the wheel.

When you're not treating the throttle like a hair trigger, the Sonata Hybrid rewards with a surprisingly normal driving experience. The run to 60 mph takes around 9.2 seconds, and thanks to the clutch separating the engine from the electric motor, transitions between internal combustion power and electric go-go are some of the most seamless in the industry. Part of the sensation that you're driving a real vehicle and not some slot-car track escapee comes from the fact that Hyundai opted for the company's proprietary six-speed automatic gearbox instead of a continuously variable transmission. Engineers may have been able to eek out a bit of additional fuel savings had it gone with a CVT, but selecting a conventional cogbox has gone a long way toward making this hybrid a more satisfying craft to pilot.

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, profile landscape

Impressively, despite the fact that this is Hyundai's first shot at a production hybrid, the electrified Sonata successfully avoids one of the biggest pitfalls of throwing an electric motor into an otherwise solid chassis. The regenerative brakes are progressive and feel just like what we expect stoppers to feel like. There's no danger of having your dental work ripped from your mouth thanks to an overly sensitive second pedal.

But that's not to say that Hyundai hasn't left room to grow in the Sonata Hybrid. Interestingly enough, the company chose to forsake forced-induction in favor of an updated version of its 2.4-liter mill. A little bit less displacement paired with a small turbo would probably help squeeze a few more mpgs out of this equation, but it undoubtedly would have swelled the per-unit cost on a model that's unlikely to make any money to begin with.

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, rear 3/4 view

Even with that shortcut under its belt, the 2011 Sonata Hybrid is an impressive first showing from Hyundai in the hybrid game. As it sits, the car is eligible for a $1,300 federal tax credit, at least for the first month it's on sale. Hyundai says that buyers can snap up their own Sonata Hybrid starting this December, but unfortunately, the federal tax incentive program for hybrid vehicles is scheduled to dry up at the end of 2010, so interested parties would do well not to dawdle.

Hyundai hasn't yet said how much we can expect to pay for its new hybrid four-door, nor what kind of warranty the model will carry when it does hit dealer lots. Given the company's long history of providing copious content and an industry-beating warranty for reasonable money, we're guessing that neither will be a point of contention when the car goes on sale. Even with those questions left blank, the 2011 Sonata Hybrid has proven itself more than capable of running with the rest of the mid-size hybrids. Is it the best of the breed? We'll need some back-to-back time to know for sure.

The 2011 Sonata Hybrid???s Secret Ingredient: Six-Speed Automatic Transmission

Published October 17, 2010

By Brad Berman

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Last year, the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid racked up award after award for its silky smooth hybrid drivetrain that made Toyota???s hybrids seem clunky and Honda???s weak. One short year later, it???s now the 2011 Sonata Hybrid making the Fusion Hybrid seem outdated and bland.

I recently spent a sunny afternoon in San Diego with the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, and came away feeling that the bar has once again be raised on how much driving pleasure can be offered by a fuel-efficient hybrid sedan.

First, let???s examine the Sonata Hybrid???s numbers compared to the award-winning Fusion Hybrid:

  • The Sonata Hybrid offers 206 net horsepower compared to the Fusion???s 191 hp.
  • The Sonata Hybrid???s aerodynamics, rated at a very slippery 0.25 drag of coefficient, is superior to the Fusion???s 0.33 Cd.
  • The use of lithium batteries, rather than the Fusion???s nickel metal hydride, provides just as much power, but allows the Sonata to weigh 263 pounds less.
  • Fuel economy for the Sonata and Fusion Hybrids are nearly identical, but with highway and city numbers swapped. The Sonata Hybrid offers 36 in the city and 40 on the highway, while the Fusion Hybrid is rated at 41/36.
  • The Sonata Hybrid???s price has not been announced, but it???s very likely to come in for a couple thousand dollars less than the Fusion Hybrid.

Then, there???s the visual design. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is hands-down more attractive and better designed than the Ford Fusion Hybrid or Toyota Camry Hybrid. The Sonata has better lines, cooler LED head and taillights, more passenger and trunk space, a better layout and feel for the driver, and unique visual cues to separate the hybrid model from its conventional and turbo siblings.

Bottom: 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid dash.

But ultimately, the real innovation that Hyundai is bringing to the hybrid world is the use of a six-automatic transmission instead of the continuously variable transmission (CVT) found in powersplit hybrids from Toyota, Ford and others.

Hyundai might have good business reasons to use its off-the-shelf automatic six, instead of a CVT???for example, lower cost and the ability to emphasize highway rather than city fuel economy. But at the end of the day, it???s customer appeal that counts.

John Krafcik, Hyundai America CEO with Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

???There???s nothing specifically synergistic between a CVT and a hybrid,??? said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai USA, who rode with me during my drive of the Sonata Hybrid in San Diego. Krafcik???s complaint about CVTs is the ???non-linearity??? between pedal input from the driver, and the sound you hear. On the other hand, with the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Krafcik believes that ???you get back exactly what you expect based on what your foot is doing.???

During my 30 or so miles of driving with the Sonata Hybrid???with a couple of short stints in the Ford Fusion Hybrid (which Hyundai had on hand for me for comparison)???I slowly came to appreciate the differences between the six-speed versus the CVT.

Keep in mind that these are relatively subtle distinctions. Yet, my hour or so behind the wheel of Sonata Hybrid showed me what I had been missing???even if I wasn???t totally aware of it???from the 2006 Toyota Prius and 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid that I???ve been driving for years: an immediate response in terms of engine sound and shifting that makes a car feel like, well, a normal car.

Removing the Motorboat Feel from Hybrids

Hyundai didn???t trust its drivetrain strategy to an arbitrary preference expressed by its CEO. The company set up a hybrid driver???s clinic???kind of like a focus group on wheels???to determine what a mix of hybrid owners and conventional drivers like and dislike about various hybrid models. The evaluation, a blind test that hid the make and model of the hybrids, was designed by Mark Guin, powertrain tuning analyst for Hyundai-Kia Motors.

???Most customers feel discombobulated by the feeling of the CVT and are uncomfortable with it,??? Guin told me at the San Diego event. I asked Guin if he thinks the CVT is what gives the Toyota Prius an appliance-like feel to the drive. ???That???s a dominant factor. There are two pieces. First, the feeling of acceleration in the seat is minimized by that motorboat rubber band feel. And it???s reinforced by the motor boat sound, as opposed to what we feel when we hear something that reinforces our expectations [of acceleration].???

Fusion Hybrid and Sonata Hybrid

The Fusion Hybrid and Sonata Hybrid, side by side, in San Diego.

As an engineer who spends his whole day living and breathing engine noise, vibration, and throttle response, he gave a perfect imitation of the Prius???s whir and whine that might occur on a highway on-ramp. ???For a lot of people in our study, the CVT undermines driver confidence. That sound says strain when it???s up high.???

Guin contrasted his rendition of the CVT with the guttural sound of a gear-shifting racecar. ???You hear kids making this sound. That says power to people,??? Guin said. With the Sonata Hybrid, you get more of that visceral response from acceleration especially as the engine reaches the top limit of one gear, and pauses for a half-beat until the next gear kicks in.

???That???s something people connect with a stepped transmission. There???s something familiar, comfortable and normal about the driving experience with our car and our architecture,??? Guin explained. ???The interaction of sound with your perception of acceleration gives confidence in available power. It???s subconscious, but it???s there.???

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Bridge Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Of course, the high-torque but silent launch of a pure electric car is still an entirely different drive flavor. Describing the differences in drive feel between a CVT, automatic six, and EV almost requires the vocabulary of a wine snob: ???ethereal yet austere, with notes of fresh cherry, a hint of blackberry and a velvety finish.???

Like wine, preferences for these hybrid and EV drivetrains are a matter of taste. During the first decade of hybrids in the United States, the mild and slightly detached feel of CVT hybrids, combined with engine shut-off and low-speed electric driving, was the only item on the menu. Hyundai is opting for more bite with its first hybrid. ???We wanted something that could feel fun,??? Guin said.

Hyundai???s 2011 Sonata Heaps Hurt on Other Hybrids

October 17, 2010

By Keith Buglewicz

Since introducing the its excellent Genesis sedan in 2008, Hyundai has been hitting its competition hard. The sedan was followed two more haymakers: the sporty Genesis coupe and then the ultra-luxe Equus. Now luxe Hyundai???s added a battery and electric motor to the already impressive Sonata. The result is a vehicle that puts the Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion hybrids in a world of hurt.

The Sonata Hybrid will deliver a devastating blow to its opponents when it rolls into showrooms later this year. It???s roomier, more comfortable, and much more handsome with a hybrid system that cleverly balances fuel economy and cost.

Hyundai???s awkwardly named Direct Hybrid Blue Drive system can run on battery power alone up to 62 mph??? system mph an impressive feat that tops its competitors by wide margins. Once the engine takes over, it delivers 36 mpg in the city and 40 on the highway, beating the Camry Hybrid and giving the Fusion Hybrid a run for the money. Surprisingly, Hyundai accomplishes this with a lot of off off-the-shelf components, keeping the cost down. Best of shelf all, the Sonata hybrid???s sweeping lines, tasteful chrome accents and slick LED lights sets it apart from the field.

Direct Hybrid Blue Drive offers the compact packaging of Honda???s Insight, but the all electric operation of the all-electric
Toyota and Ford hybrids. Like Honda, Hyundai sandwiches an electric motor ??? 30-kilowatts (40 horsepower) in kilowatts this case???between the engine and the six between six-speed automatic. But unlike the Insight, Hyundai added a computer-ic. computer controlled clutch between the engine and motor, allowing them to disengage so the Sonata hybrid can run on battery power alone.

The 166-horsepower four-banger is similar to the engine in the rest of the Sonata lineup, but it runs on what???s banger called the Atkinson cycle, which basically leaves the intake valves open longer than usual. That increases fuel efficiency, but reduces torque. You won???t miss it, though. The electric motor puts down 151 pound-feet of
torque as soon as you hit the accelerator, so the Sonata hybrid has good off-the-line punch.

Hyundai is the first automaker to use a lithium polymer battery in a hybrid. It???s smaller and lighter than the lithium-polymer
nickel-metal hydride packs Toyota and Ford use, and it packs more energy into a smaller package. That means metal Ford it can hold its charge longer while leaving a decent amount of space in the trunk. It???s also more thermally efficient, so it doesn???t need an elaborate???and expensive???cooling system.

Sedate drivers will easily see fuel economy in the 40 mpg range; hypermiliers can get more than 50 mpg. Even 40-mpg on hilly terrain???and with a few full-throttle starts we managed a very respectable 38.5 mpg. You can thank throttle starts???we the Sonata hybrid???s eagerness to drive electrically. With a full charge, you???ll go a good mile or so before the gas electrically. engine quietly kicks in to help. You can put it back in electric mode by coasting, or popping it into neutral briefly to shut off the engine. Moreover, the Sonata will stay electric at freeway speeds, a feat no other hybrid freeway can match.

Like the Fusion Hybrid, the Sonata has a handy display that, among other things, encourages efficient driving by turning it into a game. Show some restraint and drive with a measure of eco-friendliness and you???ll earn points while watching a little globe turn green and blue. Mash the accelerator like a lunatic and it???ll turn brown. You also earn points that accumulate as long as you own the car. You won???t win any prizes, but you can brag to your Prius-driving friends about it.

With 206 horsepower from the engine-motor combo, acceleration is about the same as a regular Sonatas. Pay motor close attention and you???ll feel, and hear, the engine take over from the electric motor, but it isn???t terribly noticeable. The Sonata hybrid has the grabby, regenerative brakes common to hybrids, but you quickly get used to it.

Like its siblings, the hybrid is quiet at speed, and the firm ride is comfortable and controlled. It???s no sport sedan, but handling is safe and predictable, which, really is what most folks shopping for a mid sized sedan want.

The interior features the same low gloss plastics, soft touch dash, plentiful storage nooks and comfortable
soft-touch seating as the rest of the Sonata line. There???s a standard USB port and Bluetooth, as well as power windows and and doors, push button ignition, and a six-speaker audio system. The ???premium package??? adds leather, navi, a speaker sunroof, a better stereo system and heated front and rear seats. This is a car you can live with daily and with all the gadgets and excellent fuel economy, actually makes for a good road trip vehicle.

Hyundai hasn???t released pricing, if Hyundai stays true to form it???ll undercut the Camry and Fusion hybrids hybrids??? both of which play in the $28,000 ballpark by a couple thousand dollars. And that might be the final knockout of the ballpark???by punch that puts Hyundai???s competitors down for the count.

Hyundai Took on Toyota. Now for BMW.

JOHN HARMON used to drive high-end models by BMW, Cadillac, Mercedes and Jaguar.

Now the Harmons are a Hyundai family.

They already own two ??? a 2008 Santa Fe sport utility vehicle and a 2005 Elantra ??? and Mr. Harmon, a Chicago-area electrical contractor who owns several construction companies, has his eye on the Equus, a nearly $60,000 sedan that arrives in November.

???This will go head-to-head with the BMWs and Mercedes,??? Mr. Harmon said. ???If you test-drive all of them with your eyes closed, you???re going to pick the Hyundai.???

The idea that Hyundai could compete with luxury automakers would have seemed absurd two decades ago, when its low-quality cars made the South Korean company a laughingstock in the United States.

These days, rivals know not to underestimate Hyundai and its affiliate, Kia, which have been posting record sales during one of the auto industry???s most difficult periods.

???The challenge for the Korean companies is just to keep this winning streak going,??? said James Bell, executive market analyst with the automotive information firm Kelley Blue Book. ???In a lot of ways, they followed the Japanese model of how to succeed in the marketplace.???

But while Toyota and Honda built their empires largely on reliability and fuel economy, Hyundai and Kia have taken that formula a step further with a focus on making their vehicles attractive.

???You didn???t really buy a Toyota Tercel because it was a beautiful car,??? Mr. Bell said. ???The factor that the Koreans have added to that mix is styling.???

As a result, Hyundai and Kia are becoming a serious threat to the Japanese dominance of most passenger car segments. Hyundai???s midsize car, the Sonata, was the most researched vehicle in the country in May, according to Compete, a Boston research firm.

Sales of the Sonata, which accounts for one-third of Hyundai???s total volume, are up about 50 percent this year, while demand for the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord is down slightly. Even though the Camry and Accord remain tops in their segment, Hyundai has been closing the gap quickly.

Over all, Hyundai???s market share in the United States has increased to nearly 5 percent, from 3 percent in 2008. Kia???s share has grown to more than 3 percent, from 2.1 percent in 2008.

Together the two companies, which operate independently from each other in the United States but share some operations, now outsell the Japanese carmaker Nissan. In the second quarter, Hyundai was the fifth-most-considered brand in the country, bumping Nissan to sixth place, according to a Kelley Blue Book study.

Hyundai, Kia and Subaru of Japan were the only three automakers whose sales here increased in 2009.

Hyundai expects its United States sales to top 500,000 for the first time ever this year, as its rivals grapple with sales that are far below the level of several years ago, before the recession.

In fact, the recession has been a big reason behind the success that Hyundai and Kia have enjoyed in recent years. Their models are priced lower than most of the competition, but in better times many shoppers still might not have researched Hyundai or Kia enough to see what the vehicles offered.

???It gave us an opportunity to really reach some people who might not have looked at us before ??? people who would have defaulted into an Accord or Camry,??? John Krafcik, the chief executive of Hyundai Motors America, said. ???Times like these that force people to go deeper into the purchase analysis definitely favor us.???

David Champion, the director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports, said shoppers who had not checked out Korean cars lately would probably be surprised.

???You???re not getting a bargain-basement car,??? Mr. Champion said. ???You???re getting a very well-equipped car with good reliability. Every new Kia and Hyundai that we???ve tried has been so much better than the previous model and really, really competitive.???

But for all their strides, the Korean companies still have work to do before they are broadly perceived to be among the industry???s elite brands.

???It???s still going to take time to get people into the cars and to spread the word of mouth,??? said Mr. Champion, who described Hyundai???s foray into the luxury segments as selling ???an Armani suit with a Wal-Mart label.???

Hyundai and Kia have been marketing themselves heavily to overcome outdated perceptions ??? in some cases filling voids left as the Detroit automakers pulled back on sponsorships and ads during big events like the Super Bowl.

???We didn???t use to see doctors and lawyers and that type of affluent buyer, because it just wasn???t socially acceptable to pull up in a Hyundai,??? said Brian Malpeli, who has sold Hyundais since the brand???s early years and is the general sales manager at World Hyundai in Matteson, Ill. ???But the more and more people start noticing us, the more they see the value in it.???

Mr. Harmon, who bought his Santa Fe at World Hyundai, says saving thousands of dollars to get what he considers a more enjoyable vehicle trumps any concerns about whether the brand is fashionable.

???I know what kind of quality I???m sitting in,??? he said. ???I don???t care if I pull up next to a Porsche in my Santa Fe, because he spent $110,000 for his, and I spent $30,000 for mine, and I like mine more than his.???

Only 6% of 2011 Models Tested Receive 5 Stars for Safety

Sonata, BMW top new U.S. safety tests

DAVID SHEPARDSON
Detroit News Washington Bureau

Washington ??? The BMW 5 Series and Hyundai Sonata topped all vehicles in new government crash tests for safety. But nearly every other vehicle tested got overall ratings of four stars.

The only models to receive two or three stars were from Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co.

The Camry ??? the best-selling vehicle in the United States since 2002 ??? and the Camry hybrid got three stars, while the Versa received two stars.

Under new tougher crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said 29 out of 34 2011 models tested received four out of five stars in overall ratings.

The Overall Vehicle Score combines the results of a frontal crash test, side crash tests and rollover resistance tests and compares those results to the average risk of injury and potential for vehicle rollover of other vehicles in setting a rating of one to five starsPreviously, vehicles got three crash test ratings for frontal, side and rollover ratings.

The government revised its 31-year-old New Car Assessment Program in 2008 ??? after too many vehicles were getting the highest scores ??? but gave automakers until the 2011 model year to face the new tests that grade vehicles on 1 to 5 star basis.

Among the 2011 models getting overall four star ratings: the Ford Fiesta, Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Taurus, Infiniti M37, GMC Yukon, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Subaru Outback, Toyota Sienna, Honda Pilot, Kia Sorento and Audi A4.

Just one model ??? the BMW 5 Series ??? got five stars on the first try. Initially, the first Sonata tested received four stars. Hyundai asked for a retest after it made modifications and ultimately received the highest grade. That version is currently in production.

Still in a sign of how tough the tests are ??? neither the BMW nor Sonata got ???five stars??? across the board in all three categories; both got four stars for frontal ratings.

Under the old tests, the 2010 Versa got four stars across all three tests; the 2011 model got an overall two-star rating.

Nissan spokesman Scott Vazin emphasized ???because testing guidelines are stricter, 2011 model ratings are not comparable to 1990-2010 vehicles.???

He said the compact Versa ???has performed well in real world crashes and provides our customers with good real-world safety protection. Nonetheless, we will study NHTSA's test results and take the appropriate action to ensure we deliver a high-level of real-world safety.

The 2010 Camry received five stars for frontal and side tests; the 2011 Camry gets three stars on both under the tougher tests.

???Even though star ratings may go down on certain vehicles the new star ratings do not mean that the vehicles are less safe,??? Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said. He said the ???the government ???raised the bar??? by changing the test procedures.???

If the next batch of results are in line with the first, they are likely to bring a sigh of relief from automakers ??? who were worried that many models would get two or three stars and crimp sales.

But there are many vehicles to test. Only one Chrysler model was tested ??? its new Jeep Grand Cherokee ??? and just two Toyota models were tested. NHTSA tested just one BMW and one Nissan.

But the new ratings may still make it difficult for customers to differentiate between vehicles ??? since nearly everyone received four stars. And as many as 40 percent of 2011 models will be listed as ???not rated??? in the first year, because NHTSA tests a limited number of models.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers ??? a trade association representing Detroit???s Big Three automakers, Toyota Motor Corp. and eight others ??? unveiled a new website ??? www.newstarsoncars.com ??? to explain to consumers the changes.

???We???re at a point in time when we???re seeing record-setting safety levels when it comes to auto travel,??? said Alliance president and CEO Dave McCurdy. ???The new ???Stars on Cars??? rating system will now reflect our advancements even better. But, since the tests are getting more challenging, many ratings may go down at first ??? even when a model hasn???t changed.???

NHTSA will unveil the results of another 20 tests of 2011 models later.

The upgraded ratings system evaluates side pole crash testing and crash prevention-technologies. And, for the first time, it will use female crash test dummies to simulate crash scenarios involving women, not just men.

???More stars equal safer cars,??? said Transportation Secretary LaHood. ???We???re raising the bar on safety.???

For model year 2011, NHTSA will rate 24 passenger cars, 20 sport utility vehicles, two vans and nine pickups under the new ratings system.

???We want consumers to embrace these new safety technologies as a way to make vehicles safer,??? said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland.

NHTSA recommends consumers consider vehicles with crash avoidance technologies like forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and electronic stability control (ESC). All of the 2011 model year vehicles currently rated have ESC as standard, except for the Nissan Versa, in which it is optional.

The anti-rollover technology ESC must be standard on all vehicles by the 2012 model year, under a 2007 federal regulation.

Hyundai Is ???On a Roll??? With Car Buyers

Wheels - The Nuts and Bolts of Whatever Moves You

Hyundai Is 'On a Roll' With Car Buyers

By CHERYL JENSEN

Hyundai made its first appearance in the top five most considered automotive brands among new-car shoppers, according to the latest Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence Brand Watch study.

And the Korean automaker did it by knocking Nissan into sixth place.

Among the top five, Ford kept its top spot as the most considered of 37 new-vehicle brands, with 29 percent of overall brand consideration, regardless of the segment. Toyota finished second with 22 percent, followed by Chevrolet with 21 percent, Honda with 20 percent and Hyundai with 13 percent.

The more than 3,000 new-car shoppers in this study ranked durability/reliability, driving comfort, fuel efficiency, driving performance and safety (in that order) as the top five important factors for their next new vehicle.

The latest study findings "show how the deck is being reshuffled in the automotive marketplace, with certain brands now holding places in consumer perception that we may not have believed just one or two years ago," said James Bell, executive market analyst for Kelley's site, kbb.com, in a news release. "Ford continues its upward trajectory and Hyundai is truly on a roll."

Indeed, that seems to be the case at Kelley Blue Book and elsewhere.

Kelley Blue Book named Hyundai as the No.1 "upward-climbing" brand in share of market interest in May, as Hyundai's share of new-car shopper activity increased 70 percent from May 2009. The increase was attributed to the popularity of the newly redesigned Sonata and Tucson models.

And in the first quarter of this year Hyundai became the top automaker in brand loyalty, surpassing Toyota and Honda.

Earlier this year, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata was the most -considered vehicle on Edmunds.com for five consecutive weeks, a first for Hyundai. The Tucson was also second for two weeks on the Edmunds.com analysis. And in June, the Sonata was the site's most considered vehicle.

Sales have continued to rise, with Hyundai setting an all-time July sales record, following all-time June and May sales records. July was its 19th consecutive month of year-over-year retail market share gains.

While the Genesis was its foray into the luxury market, later this year its new flagship sedan, the Equus, will go on sale. Hyundai has said pricing will start in the mid-$50,000 range.

EDMUNDS.COM'S TOP 10 BEST DARK-HORSE CARS LIST

HYUNDAI GENESIS AND SONATA NAMED TO EDMUNDS.COM'S TOP 10 BEST DARK-HORSE CARS LIST

Edmunds.com named both the 2010 Hyundai Genesis and 2011 Hyundai Sonata to its Top 10 Best Dark-Horse Cars of 2010 list. Edmunds.com, a premier online resource for automotive information, put together this list to showcase vehicles worthy of more serious consideration by car shoppers.

"The all-new Sonata is a smart buy with modern style, top-tier quality and outstanding residual value. Couple that with a four-cylinder engine producing class-leading fuel economy and the power of a larger V6, and the Sonata should definitely be on consumer shopping lists in the mid-size sedan segment," said Scott Margason, director of product planning, Hyundai Motor America. "Additionally, the North American Car of the Year-winning Genesis continues to be an extremely disruptive force in the large sedan and near-luxury segments."

The Top 10 Best Dark-Horse Cars of 2010 represent the true dark horses in the market - the cars that somehow fly just below the radar when it comes to consumer awareness, but nevertheless have a lot to offer shoppers on the hunt for quality and value.

"Although they may not have the same level of recognition as say the Ford Explorer, Honda Civic or Toyota Camry, these cars offer great value and quality, and definitely should be on more consumers' shopping lists," said Karl Brauer, Senior Analyst and Editor at Large for Edmunds.com.

"Happily, some of these picks - like the sterling Hyundai Sonata - are beginning to get the kind of buzz that assures they won't be dark horses for too much longer," said Warren Clarke, Automotive Content Editor at Edmunds.com. "Its predecessor offered solid value, but the new Sonata - redesigned for the 2011 model year - is a true game-changer. Offering great handling, a smooth ride and superb fuel economy, this outstanding four-door has what it takes to dominate the competitive midsize-sedan segment."

"The Hyundai Genesis delivers everything that luxury-car shoppers look for in a premium sedan," adds Clarke. "Its available engines offer lots of power and smooth performance, its cabin is spacious and well-appointed, and its standard features list is complete enough to satisfy the most discriminating shopper. Of course, since it's a Hyundai, it comes with a relatively affordable price; as such, this overachiever creams the competition when it comes to value."

Joining the Genesis and Sonata on the Edmunds.com Dark-Horses list are Buick LaCrosse, Ford Fiesta, Ford Fusion, Kia Sedona, Mazda5, Nissan Versa, Suzuki Kizashi and Suzuki SX4. MSN Autos Top Value Picks 10 models that are real deals.

By Kirk Bell of MSN Autos

For most of us, a car will be the second most expensive item we purchase in our lifetimes, next to a home. Unlike a dwelling, however, in which one might live for 30 or more years, we buy a different car on average every four years or so. With all that money at stake, it's advisable to shop wisely when looking for a 4-wheeled compadre. That's where MSN Autos comes in. Our reviewers are in the business of determining what is a good deal. Each of us drives 50 to 100 new cars every year. Consequently, the virtues of various models rise above the fray, and a little research into pricing reveals which automakers are offering great bargains and which are asking a bit too much for what you get. With this in mind, here are our choices for the top 10 automotive value picks on the market today

Subcompact Car: Honda Fit

Compact Car: Mazda Mazda3

Midsize Car: Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata has earned a reputation for offering most of what the big guns (namely, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry) do, but at a lesser price. But with its 2011 redesign, the Sonata is now a serious match for its more successful rivals while still coming in at prices $1,600-$2,300 less. MSN Autos Producer Mike Meredith notes that it has "the look and feel of an upscale luxury car," a trait it shares with the hot-selling Camry. Handling is improved for 2011, besting the Camry but not quite matching the Accord, and the 4-cylinder engine lineup is exceptionally fuel-efficient. Like the Accord, this midsize sedan is classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a full-size car because of its cavernous interior.

Compact Crossover/SUV: Hyundai Santa Fe

Though sized like a smaller midsize vehicle, the Hyundai Santa Fe is priced to compete against the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. We're not impressed with most compact crossovers due to cheap interiors and obvious signs of cost cutting, but the Santa Fe has a pleasant cockpit befitting a vehicle that can top $30,000. The Santa Fe embodies the rise of the Hyundai brand, with what Griffey calls "a pleasing design, upscale interior and balanced driving dynamics." Hyundai offers two fuel-efficient engines and front- or all-wheel drive, and prices range from $21,695 for a 4-cylinder front-drive version to $30,295 for an AWD V6, so you can pick the price and features that matter to you.

Midsize Crossover/SUV: Chevrolet Traverse

Sports Car: Chevrolet Corvette

Minivan: Honda Odyssey

Luxury Car: BMW 3-Series

Hybrid: Ford Fusion Hybrid

2012 Hyundai Veloster expected to breach the 40 mpg barrier

Hyundai's upcoming small sports coupe will pierce the 40 miles-per-gallon barrier, according to Hyundai Motor America president John Krafcik.

In an interview at Los Angeles, Krafcik told reporters that with this figure, its coupe will be able to beat the new 2011 Honda CR-Z, which, which despite having a hybrid powertrain, achieves only 36/39 city/highway when equipped with a CVT and 31/37 with a manual gearbox.

The Hyundai coupe, which could be named either Veloster or Tiburon, will be able to achieve those figures with a conventional four-cylinder engine, avoiding the additional cost, complexity and weight of a gas-electric system. Krafcik gave assurances that this model will beat the Honda in fuel economy and will also perform better as well as provide added utility, including rear seats and better access. Krafcik explained that since its coupe isn't powered by a highly expensive hybrid drivetrain, it's likely to be priced lower.

Krafcik told Autoblog that the coupe will appeal to the world's younger generation and increasingly auto- ambivalent consumers with additional technology. All Velosters are fitted with a large screen on the dashboard as standard equipment to manage connectivity features aside from the more conventional vehicle functions.

HYUNDAI ACCENT TOPS SEGMENT IN J.D. POWER AND ASSOCIATES INITIAL QUALITY STUDY

J.D. Power and Associates announced today that the Hyundai Accent topped the sub-compact segment in its 2010 Initial Quality Study (IQS). Owners of the economical and fun-to-drive 2010 Accent reported the fewest problems per 100 vehicles in its segment.  Elantra also finished in the top three in the compact car segment.

Overall, Hyundai finished third among non-premium brands in the 2010 Initial Quality Study at 102 PP100(ahead of Toyota, Nissan, General Motors, Chrysler, holding a top-three position for the second consecutive year, better than the industry average.  Kia was well below the industry average at 126 PP100

"Pursuit of industry-leading quality is Hyundai's number one global priority," said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America.

"It's fitting that our most economical model, the Accent, leads its class in initial quality. It demonstrates that quality and value can go hand-in-hand."

The Accent's many strengths make it not only a smart choice for buyers, but also a clear value leader in its segment. New features for 2010 - like steering wheel audio controls and iPod/USB inputs - demonstrate Hyundai's commitment to continually meeting higher customer expectations and being a class-above the competition. The Accent's smart design pays comfort dividends inside, with more total interior volume than competitors that are a vehicle class above Accent. An efficient 1.6-liter DOHC in-line four cylinder engine powers Accent with up to 36 miles-per-gallon on the highway while producing low emissions. Add in the J.D. Power and Associates IQS segment award, and Accent is a clear choice for consumers in this category.

The J.D. Power and Associates IQS measures 228 attributes, including the overall driving experience, engine and transmission, and a broad range of defect and design problems reported by vehicle owners. The 2010 study tallied over 82,000 responses from owners of new, 2010 model-year

vehicles.

Cars With the Most Horsepower Per Dollar - US News & World Report

By Nadeem Muaddi of US News & World Report

While no one wants to buy a car that's underpowered, not everyone can afford to drop big bucks on a mighty powertrain.
Perhaps that's why the issue so often goes overlooked -- especially in the classes of affordable cars, where most people shop.

In shoppers' defense, it's easier to compare such factors as seating capacity, cargo room and the number of airbags across
cars in a single class because that information is readily available. However, it takes quite a bit of math to determine how much power you're getting for your money, and whether or not it's a good deal.

By dividing each vehicle's starting price by its base trim's horsepower rating, we identified the best dollar-per-horsepower

bargains -- and even compared them to their respective class-average base horsepower ratings. What we find may shock
you.

SPORTS CARS - 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

MSRP: $22,000 - $31,000
Base Horsepower Rating: 210

When it comes to sports cars, horsepower matters. That's why the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is such a great buy. It's rating of 210 ponies breaks down to $104.76 per horsepower. Meanwhile, the 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata runs $136.59 per horsepower. Do the math, and it's clear that the Genesis Coupe is a powerful, smart buy. Its base-model rating falls just short of the 217-horsepower average in the class of affordable sports cars. But exclude the significantly more expensive 2010 Nissan 370Z, and the Genesis Coupe actually surpasses the class average by 22 horsepower. And while the Genesis Coupe may not be as sports-tuned as class rivals, it's still satisfying to drive. "When the pace quickens, the Hyundai displays modest roll and understeer, but its instinct to stay flat inspires confidence when exploring the limits," says Motor Trend.

ALL-NEW HYUNDAI SONATA HONORED WITH FIRST-EVER AUTOPACIFIC PRESIDENT???S AWARD

The all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata has earned a number of accolades since its launch  earlier this year. Today, automotive consulting firm AutoPacific added yet another to Sonata's résumé, honoring the new sedan with the first-ever President's Award in recognition of its record-breaking performance in a recent study.

With the same methodology that AutoPacific has utilized since it began
satisfaction research, 975 drivers of the all-new 2011 Sonata rated their cars in 48
separate categories ranging from the basics of comfort and convenience, to performance and environmental friendliness.

"Quite frankly, we were blown away by the results," said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific. "The sheer magnitude of the 2011 Sonata's score made recognition necessary. With a score of 775 out of 1,000, the Sonata exceeded everyone's expectations. The Sonata's unique styling was rated almost perfect and was a key driver to its overall superior performance in this research. Clearly, 2011 Hyundai Sonata drivers are extremely satisfied with their purchase." From an historical perspective, a score of 775 has never been achieved before. The Sonata's top score surpasses anything AutoPacific has ever recorded in any product category.

"Consumer response to the all-new 2011 Sonata shows the strong appeal of Hyundai's recipe of bold design, great quality, a segment-best 35 miles per gallon, and outstanding residual values," said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. "This first-ever AutoPacific President's Award, recognizing the highest score on this survey that AutoPacific has ever seen, is an apt tribute to our California design team, our global engineering team and the 2,700 team members at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama for their fresh thinking and dedication in breaking the mold of the staid and boring mid-size car."

Hyundai's all-new 2011 Sonata represents a modern approach to the traditional midsize sedan segment by using only advanced four-cylinder engines, emotional design and luxury features offered with Hyundai's strong value proposition. The Sonata launched with a new Theta II 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine and in-house six-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle offers class leading fuel economy of 22 mpg city/35 mpg highway and 198 horsepower standard. Both hybrid and turbo powertrain options will be available at the end of the year.

2010 HYUNDAI TUCSON EARNS IIHS ???TOP SAFETY PICK???

The completely- redesigned 2010 Hyundai Tucson crossover has been a huge hit with consumers since its launch in December, and today received another accolade to add to its resume. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2010 Tucson a "TOP SAFETY PICK"-achieving the highest rating of "Good" in all crash test categories including the frontal offset crash test, side impact test, rear crash protection/head restraint rating and rollover roof strength test. Vehicles with a "Good" rating in this final test have roofs that can withstand a force equal to at least 4 times the vehicle's weight. For comparison, the current federal standard is 1.5 times weight.

In order to be considered for an IIHS "TOP SAFETY PICK," a vehicle must also feature Electronic Stability Control (ESC)-a safety feature that has been standard on Tucson since the fall of 2004. In fact, Tucson was the first compact crossover to offer this
important lifesaving technology as standard equipment. This year, Hyundai has continued to innovate with the safety package on the Tucson, debuting new standard safety technologies such as Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and Hillstart Assist Control (HAC) on the 2010 model.

"The Tucson was the first vehicle in our lineup that so artfully combined state-of-the-art safety features, design and affordability," said Mike Nino, Tucson's Product Planning Manager. "The IIHS' 'TOP SAFETY PICK' confirms what we've known all along-that the Tucson is an attractive CUV and both a safety and value leader in the market.

The 2010 Tucson, priced from $18,995, comes well-equipped with standard safety equipment, including, six airbags, active front head restraints, four-wheel disc brakes controlled by an advanced four-channel ABS with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake- force Distribution (EBD), Traction Control , as well as the previously mentioned ESC. IIHS has found that ESC reduces the risk of all fatal collisions by 49 percent and the risk of fatal single-vehicle rollovers of SUVs by 75 percent.

A total of six airbags are positioned in the Tucson's interior. Dual advanced frontal airbags are complemented by front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and roof-mounted side-curtain airbags with new rollover sensors that cover both the front and rear seat rows. The combination of side and curtain airbags, which help protect the head and body during side impacts, can reduce fatalities by more than 45 percent, according to the IIHS. Beyond its wealth of safety features, the Tucson's basic construction adds to the protection of its passengers. Its steel unibody has integrated crumple zones and a high- tensile steel front sub-frame designed to work together to reduce the forces that typically reach the passenger compartment. The front side members have been enlarged and straightened to increase their impact absorbtion properties, and the center "B" pillars are designed as a one piece "internal roll bar" to create a safer cabin area for passengers. All four of the Tucson's doors also have internal guard beams to protect passengers in a side- impact collision.

The Most Car for the Least Money? The Wall Street Journal

No one will ever write erotic poetry about the Hyundai Sonata. No courting suitor ever promises a woman, "Darling, I'll give you the moon, the stars, a Sonata with cloth seats..." Snooki from "Jersey Shore" will be named secretary of agriculture before a Sonata crosses the field at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance classic-car show. These things are appliances, disposable widgets, destined to wind up as brightly colored cubes of crushed and fused metal, the unlamented scat of our mobility society.

But for now, be amazed. Be amazed that any company can put together a car with this much raw, unmitigated content-a 2.4-liter direct-injection four cylinder with variable valve timing on both cams; six-speed automatic with manual shift mode; iPod/USB/AUX jacks and Bluetooth; stability control and smart ABS; airbags and power amenities galore-wrap the whole thing in a 10-year powertrain warranty and push it out the door for $20,195. That's ridiculous, ridonkulous. This is the sort of scorched-earth pricing that makes other car makers consider a change in strategic direction. Perhaps there are some openings at Hardees?

Inside the Sonata

[SB10001424052748703709804575202062060436420]

The 2011 Sonata-the sixth generation of the nameplate in the company's history-extends Hyundai's business plan in the U.S. market, which is summed up in the phrase "overwhelming numerical leverage," which I just made up. If you lay it out and compare the Sonata with its mass-market, suburbo-drone, I-wish-I'd-stayed-single competitors-Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Chevy Malibu-the case for the Sonata is summary. On paper, at least, it's just more car for the money.

Consider the intersection of these monster numbers from Sonata's spec sheet: 198 hp (200 hp in the dual-exhaust SE model) and 35 mpg highway. The four-cylinder Honda Accord LX serves up 177 hp while delivering a highway mileage a full 4 mpg less than the Sonata. The Honda is also $1,660 more dear.

I'm not saying the Sonata is a better car. Ah, hell no. I'm saying that if you set aside intangibles-things like brand modulus, styling, materiality, and the ineffable sense of quality you get when you touch and use engineered things-the Sonata is too persuasive to ignore. In a way, Hyundai's strategy is a brilliant adaptation to a car-buying environment increasingly driven by online data comparison. If you're an overscheduled public-school teacher and you need a new car, what are you going to do? You're going to fire up the computer, go to Edmunds.com or cars.com, plow through the numbers and conclude-not unreasonably-that the Sonata is the best deal out there. Then you're going to go to one dealership, the Hyundai dealership, take the Sonata around the block and think, Yeah, OK, nice.

Let me just run this by my sales manager.

Of course, all cars are in some sense political, since country of origin and economic policy are inextricable. And here the story turns a bit melancholy. The Sonata's awesome pricing occurs at the whip end of a long chain of factors, including the fact that it's built in a place with low wages, a low standard of living and an indifferent attitude toward workers' rights. Someone really should take up a collection for Montgomery, Ala.

Hyundai, the world's fourth-largest car company by units sold, is hotter than the hinges of Hades right now. It posted a fivefold increase in profit in Q1 of 2010, to a tidy $1 billion, on the recovering world market and favorable currency-exchange rates. For obvious reasons, a stronger Japanese yen helps the Korean car maker enormously in the U.S.

Hyundai's ambitions for the Sonata transcend the value equation, however. Like the larger and equally overachieving Hyundai Genesis sedan and coupe, the new Sonata is about elevating the image of the brand.

Enter styling.

This is a nice-looking car, and for all the blathering about remote keyless entry and the like, the styling-thoughtful, attractive, premium, by several degrees above the call of duty-is the feature that impresses me most. Wrought in what Hyundai calls "fluidic styling"-trademark alert!-the car does have a handsome, hydraulic wholeness to it, like water flowing over a river rock. The bold "light spear" along the side (the shallow draft under the accent line broadens as it goes back along the side of the car, creating a spear-like shadow) plays nicely against the back-drafting energy of the roof line. A little bit of Volkswagen CC in there, a little Mercedes-Benz CLS. The most sophisticated exterior touch is a thin chromic bow that runs from the headlamp to the C-pillar along the belt line, a brightwork meteor across the car's firmament. Lovely.

Deconstructing the styling a bit: The Sonata strikes me as an aspirational placeholder kind of car, the sort of choice that will speak to people on their way up to benchmark luxury brands like Lexus, BMW, Mercedes. A luxury-car starter kit, if you will. Those sorts of buyers will equate style-the evident and obvious exertions of style rippling across the Sonata-with pride of ownership. It's worth noting that Hyundai will soon introduce the Lexus-like Equus sedan to the U.S. market-figure the early $60,000s to start-and, knowing that, I can't help seeing the Sonata as the bottom rung of a luxury ladder Hyundai is building, year by year.

Inside, the Sonata is roomy, comfortable and has some interesting choices of materials-the door panels are a kind of plasticized taffeta-but overall the car's interior is more conventional and less surprising than the exterior. The central console pours down from the upper dash between the front seats in a graceful cataract of switches and displays. However, the plastics are hard, the seats feel a little thin and door latches and switches feel and sound hollow. If I were the chief project engineer for the Sonata...well, first of all, I'd hire an engineer to replace me. But then I'd put more substance, more structure, behind these touch areas.

Nowhere does the program of radical economizing show more than in the engine sound. For all its high-tech direct-injection efficiency, this thing has a positively antique sound, with a valve click so pronounced it almost sounds like a diesel. I actually took a flashlight to my test car to see if perhaps the exhaust manifold gasket had sprung a pinhole leak, or else it had inadvertently sucked up a set of castanets. If this thing is in spec then, please, somebody send the company a box of hearing aids.

Two hundred horsepower absolves a lot, however, and the Sonata GLS gets down the road with dispatch, if not wild abandon. This is not a performance car by any means; still, the Sonata feels reasonably spry, with nicely controlled body roll, accurate steering with good feedback, and assured braking. The six-speed automatic, with the shifter in manual mode, helps the car shed its cast of servile domestication when the road opens up and the driving mood darkens.

The common midmarket midsize sedan executed uncommonly well, the Sonata is a one-car price war, a line in the sand, daring competitors to cross. Which they won't, will they? I am agog at its value. And if you have a four-letter yardstick with which you measure cars, C-A-S-H, you can stop your search here. Ditto if your yardstick says M-P-G. But I'm still not quite in love with Hyundai, still not inspired to write that love sonnet. I wait for the Equus, quill in hand.

Eco-Friendly Finaly Got Econ-Friendly

ECO-FRIENDLY FINALLY GOT ECON-FRIENDLY

The elite don't have a monopoly on the environment. Nor do they have a monopoly on our responsibility to take care of it. We all have to do our part. That's why Hyundai is taking strides toward making environmental efficiency more affordable. Over the next few years, Hyundai will introduce hybrids and other high-efficiency, low-emission models that cost far less than you'd expect. Our goal is to provide the best price-to-MPG ratios of any car company out there. After all, we can't all afford the ultra-expensive eco-machines, and we want everyone to have the opportunity to drive a little greener.

BLUE IS THE NEW GREEN

Hyundai introduces Blue Drive, an emblem that will start appearing on Hyundai models beginning with the '09 Elantra and Accent. It represents Hyundai's comprehensive overhaul of thinking green. With Blue Drive products and technologies, Hyundai will be able to achieve a fleet average of 35 miles per gallon by 2015, a full five years ahead of government guidelines.

Blue Drive vehicles are built in ISO 14001 certified plants. This means that the environmental aspects and impacts of the production process are formally managed to meet Hyundai's environmental objectives and policies, as well as our continuously improving environmental performance.

Taking leading steps in eco-responsibility, Hyundai will begin building a gas-electric full hybrid edition of the next-generation Sonata in 2010. It will be powered by a parallel hybrid drive system and lithium polymer battery technology that weighs 30% less, is 50% smaller and is 10% more efficient than the nickel-metal hydride batteries found in hybrids on the road today.

Hyundai also plans to introduce an all-new crossover featuring a 2.0-liter Theta turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine. This new engine will start to appear in various Hyundai models in the future.

And the future looks bright with plans that include Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV). All to ensure nothing but blue skies ahead.

Nissan LEAF Lithium-ion battery & 100% electric vehicle production to begin in 2012

Nissan today broke ground on the project that brings Nissan LEAF production to the United States. The groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of construction on a manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Tenn., that will produce the lithium-ion batteries that power the Nissan LEAF zero-emission vehicle. The all-electric Nissan LEAF will be produced at Nissan's vehicle assembly facility in Smyrna beginning in 2012.

Nissan LEAF and battery production will create up to 1,300 jobs when the plants are operating at full capacity. The battery plant, one of the largest vehicle battery manufacturing plants in North America at 1.3 million square feet at full capacity, will be capable of producing 200,000 advanced-technology batteries annually. It will be located adjacent to the vehicle assembly plant, which will be retooled to accommodate production of Nissan LEAF and will be capable of producing 150,000 electric cars annually.

"Nissan is committed to affordable, sustainable mobility. What we're doing here will radically transform the automotive experience for consumers. Today is a major step in helping create a green economy in the United States," said Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. "Production of Nissan LEAF and lithium-ion batteries in Smyrna brings the United States closer to its goal of energy independence, creates green jobs and helps sustain American manufacturing. Nissan is a leader in global manufacturing innovation, and this state-of-the-art battery plant will strengthen that leadership."

"Tennessee has become a national leader in driving clean energy innovation, and Nissan's commitment to build this advanced-technology battery facility here in Tennessee is a key part of that success," said Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen. "Nissan's investment in Tennessee began more than two decades ago, and this new manufacturing plant leads the way to the next generation of automotive and clean energy jobs in the Volunteer state."

Combined, the construction of the battery plant and modification of the Smyrna manufacturing facility to accommodate Nissan LEAF production represents an investment of up to $1.7 billion, which initially is being supported by a U.S. Department of Energy loan for 80 percent of that investment, up to $1.4 billion.

The loan was issued as part of the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, a $25 billion program authorized by Congress as part of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. The program is designed to accelerate the development of vehicles and technologies that increase U.S. energy independence, create cleaner means of transportation and stimulate the American economy.

Approximately 13,000 U.S. consumers have placed a reservation for Nissan LEAF since reservations opened on April 20. The reservation process, which is open to the general public via NissanUsa.com, is the first step in securing a place on the list to purchase or lease Nissan LEAF. Nissan LEAF begins rolling out to select markets in the United States, Japan and Europe in December, with increased availability beginning in spring 2011, and full market rollout in 2012. It initially will be produced in Oppama, Japan, and will be equipped with lithium-ion batteries being produced in Zama, Japan. The Renault-Nissan Alliance will also produce lithium-ion batteries in Cacia, Portugal, and Sunderland, UK, as well as in Renault's Flins plant in France.

In North America, Nissan's operations include automotive design, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing. Nissan is dedicated to improving the environment under the Nissan Green Program 2010, whose key priorities are reducing CO2 emissions, cutting other emissions and increasing recycling. More information on the Nissan LEAF and zero emissions can be found at www.nissanusa.com.

Leader of the pack: 2011 Hyundai Sonata Limited, by CNN Money.com

It's all about the product.

Leader of the pack: 2011 Hyundai Sonata Limited

I have to confess: I hadn't been totally sold on Hyundai.  Yes, it offered superb value -- more equipment than you expected for the price. But the designs were at first too quirky, and then too bland -- frankly imitative of its competitors.  Hyundai seemed more a clever follower than a market leader.

The 2009 Genesis sedan was the first Hyundai that showed real originality as well as a sophisticated aesthetic. But I wanted to see more, to make sure it wasn't just a one-off, or a flash in the pan.

Now that I've seen the 2011 Sonata, I'm ready to move Hyundai into the top tier of the world's automakers. The Sonata builds on Hyundai's traditional values of solid quality and great value, and adds elegant design inside and out, advanced engine technology, and superb fuel economy.

I am ready to declare the Sonata the leader in the industry's largest and most competitive segment: mid-size cars. To me, it is clearly superior to the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the Ford Fusion and Chevy Malibu, the Nissan Altima and Mazda 6.

I could go on about the way the Sonata looks and feels: the profile adapted from the Mercedes CLS, the high-quality interior materials, the blue-tinted indicator lights, the suave gear shift assembly.

More important to my mind is the smart thinking behind the four-cylinder Sonata.  Since Hyundai decided it wouldn't offer a V-6, the car was engineered specifically to support the smaller engine.  That enabled Hyundai to make the car 100 pounds lighter.

A new six-speed automatic transmission is 26.4 lbs lighter than the five-speed it replaces.  As a result, the Sonata is lighter than most of its competitors.

At the same time, the 2.4 liter direct injection four puts out 198 horsepower - more than all its major competitors.

The combination of light weight and high horsepower allows Sonata to scoot to 60 miles per hour in 8.1 seconds with an unusually fast tip-in that makes it feel faster.

There are risks here. The Sonata's adventurous exterior may not age well, leading to accelerated design decay.

But the public clearly approves. Hyundai sold more than 18,000 Sonatas in April, versus less than 12,000 of the old model a year ago.

Writes Automotive Lease Guide, the industry's arbiter of residual values: "Hyundai's brand momentum is about the highest in the industry, which means that the new Sonata will likely become one of the best selling cars in the segment."

And as the final evidence of the Sonata's inherent appeal, I've saved for the last a fact that used to be the lead in any Hyundai review.

$25,295 -- very nicely equipped, including leather-wrapped steering wheel and seat surfaces, power sunroof, and proximity key entry.

As tested: $28,418.

30 Nissan D22 4x4 Pick-Up Trucks Arrive in Haiti

05.20.2010 , YOKOHAMA

30 Nissan D22 4x4 Pick-Up Trucks Arrive in Haiti

Company partners with UN World Food Programme and Clinton Foundation to bring hope, help

Donation of 2009 Nissan "workhorses" built in Mexico and valued at more than a half-million U.S. dollars will deliver food and supplies to people throughout the earthquake-ravaged island nation

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced today that 30 Nissan D22 4x4 pick-up trucks arrived in Haiti and were received by the United Nations' World Food Programme. The trucks will be put to work immediately to deliver food, supplies and aid in the massive ongoing efforts to help rebuild lives in a nation ravaged by a devastating earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010.

The donation of trucks, in response to a request from former U.S. President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and currently UN Special Envoy for Haiti, is an expansion of relief efforts in Haiti sponsored by Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and its global community of employees.

"I'm pleased Nissan has answered our call for trucks to aid our recovery efforts in Haiti," said President Clinton. "This generous donation will be critical in ongoing efforts to mobilize food and other needed supplies, and I'm thankful for Nissan's leadership in demonstrating how the private sector can help the people of Haiti 'build back better.'"

With the donation of the pick-up trucks, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and its employees worldwide have contributed cash and products valued at nearly $750,000 to relief efforts in Haiti.

Immediately after the earthquake in January, Nissan employees took action to help - first with a donation of more than $100,000 cash, corporate matches for gifts from employees, and a commitment to partner with Habitat for Humanity International to construct new homes. In response to the request for trucks, Nissan's Corporate Social Responsibility team worked with the U.N. to identify a partner relief organization and found a match in the World Food Programme, which took delivery of the trucks today in Port-au-Prince.

"When the Clinton Foundation contacted us about trucks for Haiti, there was no question that we would help," said Carlos Ghosn, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. "Everyone at Nissan was eager to take action, and I know that our employees at Cuernavaca, Mexico, are especially proud that the trucks they have built in the Americas region are directly involved in helping the people of Haiti to rebuild their lives and their country."

"This is such a generous gift to the people of Haiti. Nissan and its people have demonstrated how companies and employees can step up to the plate and deliver. These Nissan trucks will help us and our partners to bring life-saving food and relief supplies to thousands of survivors in areas of Haiti that are hard to reach," said Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP). "WFP in its lead role in logistics needed new trucks and this partnership with the Clinton Foundation and Nissan comes at exactly the right time. The whole humanitarian community is grateful for this support."

The 30 pick-up trucks shipped to Haiti were built by the employees of Nissan Mexicana at the company's manufacturing center in Cuernavaca. Each truck is marked with a special message of hope from the employees, "Nissan: Dans les rues d'Haiti pour vous aider!" Translated from the Haitian French dialect, the message reads, "Nissan: On the roads of Haiti to help you!"

The Nissan D22 was identified as best suited for the relief efforts and conditions in Haiti. It has a reputation for being a "workhorse" that has been used to deliver relief to people all over the world. With that reputation, the choice of truck was clear - all that remained was logistics and reception by the World Food Programme.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. is a signatory of the UN Global Compact, through which corporations commit that they will deploy financial and human resources to aid the relief of human suffering caused by natural disasters. Nissan has a long-standing commitment to ensuring that its resources make life better for people.

Students at Carnegie Mellon University explore the future of electric vehicles

May 7, 2010

Students at Carnegie Mellon University spent the spring semester exploring the future of electric vehicles through a partnership with Nissan North America (NNA).

The class is a cross-campus collaboration among faculty and researchers at the university's Carnegie Institute of Technology (College of Engineering), School of Design and Tepper School of Business. The classroom challenge for this semester focused on addressing issues and developing solutions related to electric cars projected to be in the market in the next five years. Professionals from Nissan's advanced planning and product planning groups, engineers from Nissan Technical Center North America, researchers and designers from Nissan Design America supported the students as they executed their projects. The students' goal: developing real-world innovations for Nissan electric vehicles.

"Nissan's electric vehicle program presents an unprecedented opportunity for re-imagining the future of transportation," said Rachel Nguyen, director, advanced planning, NNA. "The student teams offered uniquely informed perspectives on zero-emission mobility and what that means for their generation."

The class worked in six teams, each of which spent the semester working towards a single concept, presented today in the final class. Nissan has committed to moving beyond a single electric vehicle solution through the introduction of several electric vehicles, and these different solutions are designed to help Nissan explore future possibilities. Projects include: an in-car work station; an interactive dashboard for entertainment and connectivity; grocery-shopping support system; an automated vehicle cleaning system; a suite of ergonomic features to reduce stress; and a vehicle trash, recycling and organization system.

"Carnegie Mellon University's interdisciplinary approach to teaching offers these students the opportunity to gain experience on real-world projects," said Jonathan Cagan, Ladd Professor of Mechanical Engineering and co-director of the Master of Product Development program. "We're looking forward to the possibility of seeing these solutions on the road, in future iterations of Nissan electric vehicles." Cagan teaches the course with Peter Boatwright, Associate Professor of Marketing, and Eric Anderson, Associate Professor of Design.

Nissan is the leader in electric-vehicle technology and will be introducing the Nissan LEAF, the first affordable all-electric vehicle designed for the mass market, to the U.S. in December. The Nissan LEAF, a five-passenger vehicle, runs on pure electricity, uses no gas and creates zero emissions. With a tested range of 100 miles on a single charge, the Nissan LEAF is designed to meet the daily driving needs of the majority of U.S. drivers.

After the application of a $7,500 federal tax credit for which the vehicle will be fully eligible, the net cost of the Nissan LEAF is as low as $25,280. The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP*) for the 2011 Nissan LEAF is $32,780. More than 8,200 people have reserved Nissan LEAF electric cars through an early reservation program. Reservations open to the general public on May 15.

MSRP excludes applicable tax, title and license fees. Dealer sets actual price. Prices and specs are subject to change without notice.

Nissan has selected Hawaii to be one of its initial launch markets in the U.S. begining in early 2011

May 5, 2010

Nissan and the State of Hawai'i are working towards a partnership to promote the development of an electric vehicle network. As part of the collaboration, Nissan has committed to make the highly anticipated all-electric Nissan LEAF available to Hawai'i consumers.

"We appreciate Nissan's recognition of Hawai'i as a global model for electric vehicles and a leader in clean energy," said Governor Linda Lingle. "The introduction of the Nissan LEAF electric vehicle will build on Hawai'i's progress to end our state's over-reliance on imported fossil fuels and increase our energy security."

"Nissan is looking forward to bringing the all-electric Nissan LEAF to the people of Hawai'i," said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Nissan North America. "Through its work in fostering zero-emissions mobility throughout the state, Hawai'i is demonstrating that it is EV-ready. These efforts, along with strong consumer interest, led us to name Hawai'i as an early launch market for the Nissan LEAF."

"In response to strong consumer demand and our commitment to electric vehicle networks, we are pleased that Hawai'i was selected as one of the first launch states," said Theodore Liu, Director, State Dept. of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. "As part of the Hawai'i Clean Energy Initiative's goal of moving towards 70 percent clean energy by 2030, we believe that the introduction and expansion of electric vehicles will give consumers more choices and reduce our state's overdependence on fossil fuels."

Nissan earlier announced that the LEAF would have a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $32,780. A federal tax credit of $7,500 for which the Nissan LEAF will be fully eligible is available. The lease price for the Nissan LEAF begins at $349 per month.

At $3.50 per gallon, a car that gets 25 miles per gallon has a fuel cost of 14 cents per mile. At $0.23 per kilowatt-hour, the Nissan LEAF has a fuel cost of 5 cents per mile.

"I'm looking forward to these vehicles being available," said Ted Peck, Energy Program Administrator, Hawai'i State Energy Office. "We've been transforming our buildings to be cleaner, more efficient, and renewable. Now we can transform our cars. This is good for consumers and good for our environment."

Interest in the LEAF is so high that Nissan began accepting reservations this month. In the U.S., more than 8,200 people have reserved a Nissan LEAF. Reservations opened to a select group of people who pre-registered on NissanUSA.com before April 20, when early reservations opened. Reservations, which are made through a $99 fully refundable reservation fee, will be open to the general public on May 15.

The Nissan LEAF is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack instead of an internal combustion engine. There are no tailpipe emissions, and the cost of the electricity to charge them is cheaper than a tank of gasoline.

Report: Hyundai Sonata Hybrid could hit 40 mpg, pricing to start around $26,000

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

While Hyundai Motor America's CEO doesn't believe in the viability of diesels in the US, it is betting that the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will be a success for the brand. When 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid made its debut, the Korean automaker said that the sedan should be capable of achieving a fuel-economy of 37/39 mpg (city/highway). Speaking to AutoblogGreen, Hyundai CEO John Krafcik said that the Sonata Hybrid could hit 40 mpg highway. "We're working on final calibration???and the fuel economy estimates could come in a little better than before," Krafcik said. "We said the Sonata Hybrid will have the highest fuel economy of any mid-size hybrid. We predicted 39 mpg, we may hit 40 mpg." In terms of pricing, Krafcik said that the Sonata Hybrid may start around $26,000 and top out at $30,000. Refresher: The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is powered by a 2.4L Theta II engine making 169-hp at 6,000 rpm and 156 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. The engine is mated to an electric motor that makes an additional 40.2-hp and 151.2 lb-ft of torque. Working together side-by-side, both units develop a total of 209-hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid can also operate in EV-only mode at speeds of up to 62 mph.
